Camel Filters Blend Development Test – Malaysia
Purpose
To determine the effect of local content/top dressing variations on consumer perceptions.
Action Standard
A prototype achieving statistical superiority over Marlboro on key ratings can be considered as a replacement for the current imported-blend Camel Filters.
Conclusions
The prototypes do not meet the Action Standard, as the general pattern of scores in both the consumer tests and smoking panels indicates that none of the prototypes are an improvement over current Camel Filters. 7-10 scores directionally favor current Camel Filters over the two prototypes in the consumer tests. Overall mean scores directionally favor current Camel Filters over 5% local, and significantly favor current Camel Filters over 15% local. Product preference scores clearly show current Camel Filters superior to the prototypes, while the Marlboro franchise considers current Camel Filters to be as good or better than Marlboro or either prototype on overall and preference scores. Smoking panelists gave directionally better overall and product preference scores to current Camel Filters in all three panels. Both the 5% and 15% local prototypes are deficient in tobacco taste to current Camel Filters while showing no significant differences otherwise. Current Camel Filters is essentially at parity with Marlboro on attribute and evaluative scores in panel and consumer tests, with directional differences balancing out.
Recommendations
As results are less favorable than those from earlier testing in which a different substitution scheme was used, RJRM prefers to adopt the original scheme at a 10% level, pending further testing.
