The History Of Marlboro Lights

Discussions began at Philip Morris to introduce a good tasting cigarette marketed as low tar.
• Parliament and Multifilter had low tar, but were not marketed as such
• Idea of introducing a low tar version of Marlboro was being championed at Philip Morris
• However, there were grave concerns at both PM and LBCo:
• Red was growing; why risk cannibalizing the growth?
• What would a lower tar version do to the traditional Marlboro image?
• What would we call this thing?
• As a result, great care was taken when Marlboro Lights was finally launched

Marlboro Lights was born with the national launch of Marlboro Lights 85's soft pack in January, 1972.
• It was in test market for 6 months in 1971 in New England
• It was the first brand to carry the "Lights" designator
• Every effort was made to differentiate Marlboro Lights from Red/Gold in order to prevent cannibalization
• Different flavor blend
• White filter with plastic plug
• Launched with "watercolor" print
• First year of ban on broadcast advertising
