Kent cigarettes
Kent was introduced in 1952 but it was not until the 1957-1958 period that Kent made an impact on the U.S. market.
In 1957, Kent sold a little over 15 billion units or 4% of total U.S. cigarette sales (this was a 5 fold increase over 1956).
In 1958, Kent experienced phenomenal growth to 36.4 billion units equivalent to an 8% share of total market. Kent was the fifth largest brand and the second largest filter brand in the country.
In this same two year period (1957 and 1958) the market grew 6.6% and Kent 140%. The impetus to this sales increase was provided by a series of articles in Reader's Digest.
Kent continued to grow at a very modest rate for the next two or three years.
In 1967, a 100mm product was added to line of Kent but the total brand never experienced a meaningful recovery from the 1963-1964 period.
In 1970, a 100mm menthol product was introduced.
