Winston King Size Product Acceptability and Blend Test – Hong Kong/Macau
Purpose
To ascertain the acceptance and performance of HK-produced Winston King Size among franchise and competition vs. the current US-produced Winston, Marlboro, Viceroy and three new Winston prototypes.
Action Standard
Local Winston and prototypes must achieve at least parity vs. the US counterpart, and at least parity vs. Viceroy and Marlboro among prime prospects – Viceroy and Marlboro smokers aged 26-35.
Conclusions
The local Winston product achieved overall superiority to the current US Winston, Viceroy and Marlboro among franchise. The local Winston matched the US version on all key measures, except for its relatively lower quality rating. Constructionally, the local product burned slower, was more firmly packed and less easy to draw. Among competition, local Winston matched Viceroy and Marlboro on overall ratings. Relative to Marlboro, it was rated stronger tasting, more satisfying, slower burning and with better tobacco taste. The US-produced Winston also achieved superior overall ratings vs. Marlboro and Viceroy among franchise. Compared to Viceroy, US Winston led in all product attributes, especially in smoothness, adequacy of. taste and more pleasant flavor and aroma. Vs. Marlboro, US Winston was found to be stronger but less smooth, with a more pleasant aroma, higher satisfaction and better quality. Among competition, US Winston attained parity to Marlboro and Viceroy. All prototypes failed to meet the Action Standards.
Recommendations
As the locally produced Winston meets the Action Standards, no changes are deemed necessary. The consistently higher ratings for strength of taste, however, may indicate an opportunity to launch Winston Lights.
